Few aware of their right to compensation when flight is delayed

When the flight is delayed you may be entitled to several euros in compensation. Something only every fourth traveller know of according to a new Sifo survey.

As a traveller in the EU, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline when the flight is delayed by three hours or more. A right that few Swedes know of. According to a Sifo survey, only every fourth traveller know that they can claim compensation from the airline when they suffer from delayed flights.

The amount of compensation you are entitled to depends on the length of flight. For flights from Sweden to the Mediterranean Sea, the compensation is usually 400 euros per passenger.

"That is a lot of money, especially when travelling as a family. For example, a family of four people who get more than three hours late to their final destination in Majorca may receive more than 1 600 euros in compensation, "says Jolanda Girzl, Director of ECC Sweden.

More consumers pay for assistance to claim compensation

According to the survey, only 15 percent of the passengers that are affected by delayed flights claim compensation from airlines. Although it is free to request compensation, more and more chose to pay private claim companies to claim compensation from the airlines. Some companies charge a fee equivalent to 25-30 percent of the compensation.

- The family in the example would lose hundreds of euros on not claiming compensation on their own. If they use a claim agency, they would get a compensation of 1200 instead of 1 600 euros if they claim compensation directly from the airline, says Jolanda Girzl.

The Swedish Consumer Agency considers that there are shortcomings in how compensation companies market their prices and that the company's terms of contract are in some cases long, complex and unfair.

How to claim compensation for delayed flights

  • Send a written complaint to the airline by e-mail or letter. Write that you want compensation and explain why. Attach copies on ticket and receipt. Save the original receipt and copy of your complaint.
  • If you do not receive an answer from the airline or receive a response you are not satisfied with, contact ECC Sweden.
