No more data roaming charges within EU

8/10/2015

From the middle of 2017, you do not need to pay any extra fees while using a mobile phone in another EU-country.

After long negotiations, the EU parliament and the member states finally has agreed on a preliminary package whose aim is to liquidate the digital boundaries of the union.

The EU parliament wanted to abolish charges altogether promptly, but the member states have called for a transitional period. Therefore, they have compromised the following solution; in April 2016 a ceiling will be set for roaming charges and in June 2017 the charges will be completely abolished.

From April 2016, telecom operators will not be able to add a surcharge of more than:

  • € 0,05 (3,5p) extra per minute for calls
  • € 0,02 extra per SMS sent
  • € 0,05 extra per megabyte of data used.
