Declining car prices within the EU

2010-08-26

The European Commission’s annual report about car prices is now published. The report is written to help consumers compare car prices and to make it easier for them to take advantage of the opportunities of the internal market.

The result of the report shows that the prices have gone down during 2009, and that the price differences have decreased within the internal market. The prices of repairs, maintenance and spare parts however, have continued to increase faster than the inflation rate. The exceptions are the prices in United Kingdom and Sweden, where the prices have increased with 7, 7 percent respective 2,7 percent.

One should keep in mind though, that the car prices in these two countries declined a lot during 2008, and both British and Swedish consumers are therefore paying less now, than they did in the beginning of 2008. However, in most member states, the prices have gone down during 2009. Especially in Slovenia, Slovakia and Lithuania where the price fall was more than 10 percent.
