An Internal Market on the European Seas?

2008-01-28

For a long time we have seen how the European Union has worked hard to create a well-functioning Internal Market. To do this, all borders between Member States have been removed. Yet, this goes only for the national borders on land but when it comes to the national sea borders, on the other hand, the situation is completely different. For example, if goods are being transported from a harbour in one Member State to a harbour in another Member State, then the goods have to pass the control of the customs. However, if the goods had been transported by railway, no such custom controls would have to take place. Luckily, the European Union has observed this situation and is discussing a change of rules. A free movement of goods could therefore be possible at sea one day.
